What is IoT?
IoT stands for the internet of things. It is the interconnection of computing devices connected over the internet with everyday objects. That can collect or receive data from other devices. In simple words, we can say that connection of different devices for sharing of data over a wireless network without human need. Moreover, many organizations are using IoT to work more efficiently. Better understand customers to provide better services. Improve decision making. Also, increasing the value of a business.
History of IoT
Kevin Ashton is the father of the internet of things. He was co-founder of Auto-ID Center at MIT. In 1999, Kevin made a presentation to P&G where he first mentioned the term internet of things.
How Internet of Things works?
It consists of smart devices that are connected to the network that use fixed systems, such as sensors, processors, and communication devices to collect, send and act on data they need for efficient working. IoT devices share the data which they collect by connection over some gateway or edge devices. Later that data is sent to the cloud to study or it is directly scanned.
Similarly, these devices interact with other related devices and act on the data they get from each other. These devices do most of the work without human action, also people can communicate with these devices. The networking, interaction, and connectivity protocols used with these smart devices depend on IoT applications. Artificial intelligence and machine learning can also be used in collecting data and makes them easier.
Why IoT is important?
IoT helps people work and live smarter. Internet of things also helps people to have full control over their lives. Internet of things is also useful to business. It provides businesses with an all-time look at how their system works. Also, insights of performance of machines and logical operations. It also helps in reducing labor costs. It improves service delivery making it cheaper for manufacturers. IoT helps to reduce waste. Also, provides ease in customer transactions. As well as IoT is one of the best and most important technologies in everyday life.
Pros and cons of Internet of Things:
Advantages of Internet of Things are as follows:
- Potential to access any data on any device from anywhere at any time.
- Better interaction between connected devices.
- Movement of data packets over a network reducing cost and time
- Improving the quality of services and reducing human actions.
Some of the disadvantages of IoT are as follows:
- With the increase in the number of devices over a network, then there is a chance for a hacker to steal the information at the time of data transfer.
- Storing and managing the data from some devices is a tedious task.
- If there is a bug in a system then all the devices that are connected get affected.
- Since there is no closeness between different IoT devices, then it is difficult for devices to interact with each other
IoT security and privacy issues:
As in the internet of things, billions of devices are connected over a network that requires billions of data points, all of which need to be secured. Due to increased attacks, IoT privacy and security are mention as major concerns. Attackers access the data by targeting a badly secured IoT device. As all devices are connected closely, so the hacker has to only exploit one device to operate all other’s data. Developers that don’t upgrade their devices regularly or leave the devices that devices are more prone to cyber-attacks.
For instance: In 2016, one of the most dangerous recent IoT attacks was Mirai, in which many websites were down for an extended period.
