We will compare the Apple A15 vs Snapdragon 870. We will also find which processor is better in which domain and which we should prefer while buying any electronic product.

Let’s first talk about the Apple A15 Bionic Chip. It is one of the latest processors launched by Apple. It is the best processor launched by Apple till date. With the help of these processors, we are able to experience the speed of the iPhones.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 870 processor, one of the 5G processors of the 800 series launched by Qualcomm in January 2020. In the last post, we have seen that it is better than MediaTek Dimensity 1000 plus. This processor has one of the best GPU and CPU installed in it. It gives one of the best performances in terms of display, RAM, video recording, etc.

But the most important question for which you are reading this post is which processor anyone should choose and why? 

As we know both these processors provide the best performance so now look at the detailed comparison for better understanding. For this, we will be comparing both these processors in many domains like RAM, display, GPU, CPU supported by both of them. Apple launched its latest A15 Bionic Chip on 14 September 2021. On the other hand, Qualcomm launched its Snapdragon 870 last year on 19th of Jan 2020.

Apple A15 Bionic Chip is loaded with a dual-cluster architecture. The approach of the A15 chip for any work is a 2+4 approach. On the other hand, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor comes up with a tri-cluster/group of architecture. As it works on the pattern of 1+3+4.

In 2+4, the first cores are designed for high performance work. AVALANCHE cores are installed in this for better performance. As it provides a clock speed of 3.2 GHz.On the other hand, Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, which is designed for high-speed tasks. This core consists of ARM Kryo 585 Prime CPU that works on the principle of ARM Cortex A77. Also, it provides the same clock speed of 3.2 GHz.
The next four cores of this processor are designed for tasks that need efficiency. The cores which are used are BLIZZARD cores. With the help of these cores it provides a clock speed of 1.82 GHz.The next three cores of Snapdragon 870 are used for low performance tasks. These cores are made up of ARM Kryo 585 Gold CPU that works on the principle of ARM Cortex A77. Which gives a clock speed of 2.4 GHz.
Last four cores are installed for efficient tasks. These cores are made up of ARM Kryo 585 Silver CPU whose main principle of working is ARM Cortex A55. Most importantly it provides a clock speed of 1.8 GHz.

If we compare the CPUs of both these processors then we can conclude that the Apple A15 Bionic Chip is slightly better than Snapdragon 870. As it has more powerful cores than the 870 because of which it will give better performance with more efficiency. Also, it produces a better clock speed.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 advantages

-> CPU Fabrication Process:

Let’s talk about the CPU fabrication process of both processors. Apple A15 Bionic Chip is designed on the technology of 5NM, in which the 2nd generation 5NM process of TSMC was used in this. The Snapdragon 870 processor is made up of 7NM fabrication process technology.

-> CPU Architecture & Core:

Now let’s see the CPU cores and architecture of both processors. The Snapdragon 870 processor is a 64-bit octa-core processor. Eight cores are installed in this processor for multiple tasks and better performance. On the other hand, the Apple A15 Bionic Chip is a Hexa-Core 64-bit processor. Six cores are installed for better performance and to do multiple tasks side by side.

Apple designed 5 core GPU is installed in Apple A15 Bionic Chip. Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 is made using Qualcomm Adreno 650 GPU. One of the best GPUs of all time.
This GPU provides a clock speed of 1511 MHz.This GPU remains at 7nm.This GPU works on 7nm.

RAMs of different configurations are supported by these processors.

Apple A15 Bionic Chip consists of a dual-channel LPDDR5 RAM that has a RAM frequency of 2750 MHz.Whereas, Snapdragon 870 processor also supports LPDDR5 RAM of quad channel which has a frequency of 2750 MHz.
LPDDR4X RAM is supported by Snapdragon 870 which has frequency up to 2133 MHz.
This processor can only support RAM of 8GB.While this processor can support 16GB of RAM.

From the table, it is clear that both the processors support LPDDR5 RAM which provides a very high frequency to smartphones. But the advantage of using Snapdragon 870 processor is that, it supports LPDDR4X RAM also, which is not possible in the Apple A15 Bionic chip. Also, Snapdragon 870 supports 16GB of RAM that is not available in the Apple A15 Bionic chip.

-> Storage Support:

Apple A15 Bionic chip comes with NVME storage. At the same time, the Snapdragon 870 processor supports multiple storage options like UFS 2.1, UFS 2.2, UFS 3.1, and EMMC 5.1. But NVME is far better than that Snapdragon 870 supports.

This processor supports 12+12 megapixels of cameras two at a time.This supports two 25+25 megapixel cameras one at a time.
This processor also supports a 12 megapixel mono-camera.This can support a 64 megapixel mono-camera which can support both MFNR and ZSL.
According to reports this processor has a capability to support a camera of 200 megapixels.

From the table, we can conclude that the Snapdragon 870 processor supports more cameras with higher megapixels than Apple A15 Bionic Chip. But, we all are aware that Apple provides better picture quality than another Android phone then A15 supports better quality of cameras.

A15 Bionic Chip supports UHD recording of 4K at 30FPS and of 60FPS.This processor also has support for video recording of 4K at 120FPS with a resolution of 2160P.
 Moreover, it supports video recording of 1080P at 60FPS.
870 also supports video recording of 720P at 480 FPS.

It is clear that the Snapdragon 870 processor is far better than the A15 Bionic Chip in the domain of video recording.

4K display support is available in Apple A15 Bionic Chip. This supports a pixel resolution of 2160 × 3840.4K display support is also available in this processor which has a refresh rate of 60Hz. This supports a pixel resolution of 2160 × 3840.
This processor also supports 120 Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, it supports QHD+ display at a refreshing speed of 144Hz. This supports a pixel resolution of 1440 × 3360.

It is clear that both processors support a 4K display. At the same time, Snapdragon 870 has a better refresh rate. Also, it supports a QHD+ display which is not available in Apple A15 Bionic Chip.

Qualcomm X60 5G Modem is supported by Apple A15 Bionic Chip.On the other hand, the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem is supported by the Snapdragon 870 processor.

The conclusion from the above comparison is that Apple A15 Bionic Chip consists of better and more powerful features like quality, Geekbench score, ANTUTU score, storage support, and GPU. As it is clear that both these processors are 5G processors and both these are better than another one in some domains but because of speed it is clear that Apple A15 Bionic Chip is better than the Snapdragon 870 processor.
